HSI biennial conferences provide great opportunities to network and learn about the latest in research and industry relating to Zingiberales. Conferences are accompanied by field oriented pre and post tours. During pre and post tours you will be able to experience Zingiberales along side of fellow enthusiast and experts. If you are interested in attending or presenting at the International Conference in Hawaii in 2025 and/or participating in the pre and post tours, register by filling out this form and emailing it to hsicon25@gmail.com.

March 23-25, 2025

March 22-Arrival Day: Arrive at Honolulu Airport, and shuttle to hotel. Lodging for the conference and optional Oahu                                        pos tour is offered at University of Hawaii’s University Housing Lincoln Hall Hotel.

March 23- Conference Day 1: Board Meeting, tour of Lyon Arboretum and hike to Manoa Waterfall.

Lyon Arboretum is part of the University of Hawaiʻi and a public botanical garden nestled in the back of Mānoa Valley, just five miles from the bustle of Waikiki. Lyon Arboretum has over seven miles of hiking trails and boasts more than 6,000 taxa of tropical and sub-tropical plants on nearly 200 acres. The tour of the grounds will be guided by one of the arboretum staff.

Manoa Falls is a famous waterfall located behind Lyon Arboretum. The hike is 1.7 miles out and back with an elevation gain of 616 ft. The ~2 hour hike will take us to the back of Manoa Valley to view the nearly year-round waterfall.

Oahu Post Conference Tours
March 26-27, 2025

March 26- Oahu Post-Conference Tour Day 1: Tour Waimea Valley Botanical Garden, walk through and visit famous                                                                                   Haleiwa, the historic surf town and cultural hub of the North Shore.

Waimea Valley’s Botanical Garden includes 52 themed gardens and is the home to over 5000 documented types of tropical and subtropical plants including native Hawaiian plants and globally endangered species. The garden visit will include a tour with expert garden staff.

Haleiwa Town is one of Hawaii’s most famous locations, known for its laid-back surf-town vibe. Haleiwa is the social and artistic hub of the North Shore showcasing art galleries and boutiques to explore. Haleiwa is also right on some of the best North Shore beaches if a day at the beach or surfing is on your to-do list.

March 27- Oahu Post-Conference Tour Day 2: Tour and interact at Kualoa Ranch, enjoy an afternoon at the                                                                                                 Polynesian Cultural Center with a full Hawaiian Luau in the evening to                                                                                 finish off the day.

Kualoa Ranch Nature Reserve is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. Today, Kualoa is a 4,000 acre Private Nature Reserve as well as a working cattle ranch. Kualoa is one of the most historically significant areas on Oʻahu, and in ancient times, it was one of the most sacred places on the island. The tour will include a hands on experience in the traditional agriculture systems.

The Polynesian Cultural Center is like a theme park tour through six different Polynesian island nations. The center has different “villages’ for each nation with cultural presentations and hands on activities to learn about each culture. The tour will end with a traditional Hawaiian Luau dinner in the evening.

Big Island Post Conference Tours
March 28-29, 2025

March 28- Big Island Post-Conference Tour Day 1: Depart Oahu for Big Island, tour Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and                                                                                           Garden, tour and interact at Hamakua Chocolate Farm, visit and                                                                                         shop in Hilo Town, visit Mauna Kea Visitor Center for star gazing.

Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden is home to more than 2,500 species of plants, including many in the Zingiberales order and other rare and endangered flora. The dense garden ends at the stunning Onomea Bay in east Hawaii.

Hamakua Chocolate Farm is a contemporary botanical garden and chocolate farm. This event includes a guided tour through the botanical garden and a hands-on experience in chocolate making.

Mauna Kea Visitor Center is situated at 9,200 ft and is very isolated. Mauna Kea is known globally as one of the best star viewing locations on earth for these reasons. The moon will be at nearly its lowest luminosity during this excursion as well, making for excellent viewing of the Milky Way Galaxy and other celestial bodies.

March 29- Big Island Post-Conference Tour Day 2: Tour Plant Group Hawaii, tour volcano National Park, Lava                                                                                                 viewing (depending on conditions).

Plant Group Hawaii is a retail business that collects, cultivates, and conserves rare tropical plants, many within the Zingiberales order. This tour will explore their diverse living collection and include a hands-on workshop.

Hawaii Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park protects some of the most unique geological, biological, and cultural landscapes in the world. From sea level to peak the park encompasses the summits of two of the world's most active volcanoes and is a designated International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tour on your own or with the group and enjoy dinner and lava viewing in the evening.

March 30-Departure Day: Depart from Hilo to home destination.
